Embracing Spiritual Renewal in the High Holy Days

There is a beautiful teaching in our tradition: during the month of Elul, the Holy One draws close and opens a door for us. Elul invites us to pause, to breathe, to look inward and ask—what am I carrying from the past year, and what do I hope to bring with me into the year ahead?
Elul is not about rushing or perfection. It is about gentle turning—turning back toward what matters most, turning toward each other, turning toward the Source of Life that calls us with love. In the words of our sages, Elul calls us to return to who you are, return to what you are, return to the land of your soul.
The daily recitation of Psalm 27 throughout Elul is one of the ways our ancestors prepared for the Days of Awe, and it remains a timeless practice to steady our hearts with courage and hope.
This year, as we journey through Elul together, our community at Temple Beth Israel–Shaare Zedek in Lima is preparing with open arms and open hearts for the sacred days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These days are often called the “High Holy Days,” but more than anything, they are days of return: return to prayer, return to community, return to the deepest truths of who we are.
Whether you are someone who comes every year, someone who has been away for a long time, or someone who is simply curious, we want you to know: you are welcome here.
Please join us for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, either in person at our synagogue in Lima or from afar via Zoom. Together we will sing, pray, reflect, and begin a new year with blessing, courage, and hope.
If you would like details about our services or the Zoom link, please reach out to me at dan@rabbibetzel.com.
May this season of return guide us with gentleness and strength. May we be renewed in love and community as we enter 5786 together.
With blessings of peace, Rabbi Daniel Betzel Temple Beth Israel–Shaare Zedek, Lima, Ohio
