Preparing Our Hearts: Reflections on Parashat Vayakhel and Shabbat Parah

This week, we read Parashat Vayakhel, a portion that speaks to the power of community and sacred work. After the turmoil of the Golden Calf, the Israelites come together to build the Mishkan, the portable sanctuary. Every contribution matters — gifts of gold, silver, and precious materials, but also gifts of skill, effort, and heart. Through this collective act of holiness, the community is repaired and renewed.
This Shabbat is also Shabbat Parah, the special Shabbat leading us toward Pesach. We read about the ritual of the Parah Adumah, the red heifer, a symbol of purification and renewal. As we prepare our homes for Passover, removing chametz and making space for the holiday of liberation, we are also called to prepare our hearts.
What does it mean to purify and renew ourselves spiritually? Just as the Israelites brought their unique gifts to the building of the Mishkan, we too have the opportunity to reflect on what we bring to our communities, our families, and our inner lives. Are there places in our hearts in need of healing or renewal? Are there ways we can contribute to the sacred spaces around us?
With Pesach approaching, we are reminded of the transformative power of freedom and responsibility. Let this Shabbat be a time of reflection and connection — to our tradition, our community, and the Divine.
Wishing you a meaningful Shabbat and a joyful journey toward Pesach!
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Betzel
